What to Expect from a Counselor/Therapist PDF Print E-mail
When you attend your first therapy session, the counselor will introduce him or herself, and tell you about his or her training and experience. You will discover if the philosophy and outlook of the counselor is similar to yours, and if you feel comfortable working with this therapist. A good counselor will provide a safe and secure space in which you can express your needs, desires, and challenges. Counselors also provide education about your symptoms, so that you can learn what is normal and functional. Often, your symptoms fall on a continuum, and may lessen or increase depending upon the various stressors that you are experiencing. Many counselors use different assessment tools to get a snapshot of your symptoms when you first begin treatment.

How to Choose a Counselor/Therapist PDF Print E-mail

If you do not have insurance, or choose to self-pay, you can ask someone you trust (physician, clergy, close friend) for a referral. If you decide to go through your insurance provider, do know that the clinician you see is required to report the details of your condition (i.e., diagnosis) to your insurance company in order to obtain authorization for your visits. You may be responsible for a co-pay at each visit.
