Ethics

"The moral man is not the one who merely wants to do what is right and does it, nor the man without guilt, but he who is conscious of what he is doing." Hegel (1770-1831)

The Ethics Committee is a standing committee of the Connecticut Counseling Association whose purpose is to promote the highest possible level of professional and ethical conduct among its members. The goals of the committee are to:

1. Promote awareness and understanding of ethical standards and issues.

2. To provide information, support and consultation to members in clarifying ethical concerns.

3. To encourage active participation in ethical issues throughout the state.

4. To encourage CCA membership as a commitment to professionalism.

The committee accomplishes it goals in a variety of ways including: disseminating copies of the current ACA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice at meetings and events, publishing articles in the Ethics Corner of The Connecticut Counselor, conducting workshops and panel presentations on ethical issues at state conferences, and encouraging membership in the American Counseling Association, the Connecticut Counseling Association and their affiliate organizations.

The Ethics Committee does not investigate or adjudicate complaints made against CCA members but may refer such complaints to appropriate jurisdictions. CCA members who wish to consult with members of the Ethics committee about an ethical problem or concern may contact any one of the members listed below. Ethics Committee members will not provide specific solutions to ethical dilemmas, but will serve in a consultative capacity assisting the counseling practitioner to consider all relevant aspects of the ethical problem. Before contacting a member of the Ethics Committee, CCA members are encouraged to first carefully review the ACA Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice to determine which sections might be relevant to their situation. The ACA Code of Ethics may be accessed at the following link.
